What is World Art Day?
World Art Day is a chance to highlight the importance of art in all its forms and celebrate the positive impact it has on society. Commemorating art and artists worldwide, this day encourages creativity and appreciation for expression. People celebrate the day by making art, discussing artists they love and participating in art-focused events.
When is World Art Day?
World Art Day happens every year on April 15. The day also commemorates the birthday of the well-known artist Leonardo da Vinci. Honored as a champion of the arts, Leonardo da Vinci supported freedom of creative expression, and his work symbolizes the impact art has on all areas of life.
The history of World Art Day
The idea for World Art Day was first suggested in 2011 by the International Association of Art (IAA) to promote creativity, cultural diversity and social change. In 2012, the first World Art Day was commemorated on April 15. Since then, World Art Day has been observed through festivals, workshops and celebrations across cultures and countries.
Why does St. Jude celebrate World Art Day?
At St. Jude, we understand how important creating art is in comforting us during difficult times and helping us relieve stress and anxiety. Many St. Jude patients participate in art therapy during their treatment to help them explore complex feelings and improve their quality of life. Some St. Jude kids find it to be an escape from the more challenging parts of cancer treatment. We love celebrating World Art Day as a chance to remember the impact and support art has on the kids of St. Jude.

1. Make art
Making art can help you feel a sense of accomplishment, build self-esteem and improve mental health. The result isn’t as important as the process of making art itself, so World Art Day is an opportunity to explore mediums you aren’t as experienced in. Remember that art comes in many forms — everything from fine arts to clay sculpting to hand-drawn doodles. Find a form of art that you like and create something.
2. Visit an art museum or exhibit
Looking at art can help you build a connection with history and inspire you to be creative. Consider visiting an art museum or exhibit near you this World Art Day to learn more about art and artists. You may even find art exhibits in your area featuring local artists.
3. Buy art
Another way to commemorate World Art Day is by buying art. Buying art supports the artists and shops you purchase from, as well as gives you the chance to see and appreciate it every day. Browse local or online shops to find pieces that fit your home or personal taste and support an artist at the same time.
In the St. Jude Gift Shop, you can find items incorporating art from St. Jude kids, like lanyards, shirts or table-top decorations.
4. Sign up for an art class or workshop
Participating in an art class or workshop is a way to start creating art with a little help and inspiration. Classes and workshops also provide chances to meet new people and be exposed to new forms of art. You may be able to find free art classes at your local library or arts nonprofit or search online for a class that fits your budget.
5. Watch an art documentary
Watching documentaries about artists, art history or iconic works of art is a way to appreciate art and learn something, too. Look for documentaries to stream online, or search for showings in your area to attend. Documentaries can cover a variety of topics and historical periods. Consider looking for subjects that overlap with other topics you enjoy learning about.
