Esmeralda is a playful, sweet girl who loves dolls and princesses. When she was diagnosed with Wilms tumor, a type of kidney cancer, her family traveled to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
Treatments invented at St. Jude have helped push the overall childhood cancer survival rate from 20% to more than 80% since it opened more than 50 years ago. St. Jude is working to drive the overall survival rate for childhood cancer to 90%, and we won’t stop until no child dies from cancer.
St. Jude is a miracle. It’s truly a blessing here because of the way we are helped and the way we’re taken care of.
Esmeralda's mother

At St. Jude, Esmeralda’s treatment included chemotherapy and radiation therapy. Unfortunately, Esmeralda’s cancer returned in December 2016, and she is currently undergoing additional treatment at St. Jude.
“St. Jude is a miracle,” said Esmeralda’s mother. “It’s truly a blessing here because of the way we are helped and the way we’re taken care of.”
Editor's note: We regret to inform you that Esmeralda lost her battle in March 2018.
