In 2021, Shayla was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia, or AML. She underwent chemotherapy at a hospital near her home. “But within three months we heard that word that nobody wants to hear,” said her mom, Shelanda. “Relapse. All the walls came crashing down.”
The family was referred to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital®, where doctors pivoted to devise a new treatment plan, which successfully reduced the leukemia in her bone marrow to zero and cleared the way for Shayla to undergo a bone marrow transplant. It was critical the transplant happen as quickly as possible, and the wait for a donor can be long.
Fortunately, St. Jude has pioneered the haploidentical transplant, which utilizes a half-matched donor. This way, Shayla was able to receive her mother’s bone marrow in November 2022.
“Her immune system is rebuilding itself," said Shelanda. "She’s getting closer and closer to being a normal kid. For many reasons, St. Jude saved Shayla’s life.”
