What is National Nurses Month?
National Nurses Month is celebrated every May to further recognize the essential role nurses play in healthcare. The nurses of St. Jude are critical to the success we've had in helping find cures for childhood cancer. Many have pursued this rewarding career by following in a family member's footsteps or fulfilling a desire to care for others or even as a way to give back St. Jude for treating a family member.
When do we celebrate nurses?
While it’s important to show appreciation for medical professionals year-round, we can highlight celebrating nurses during:
- National Nurses Day (May 6 and kicks off National Nurses Week)
- National Nurses Week (May 6 - 12 with different days celebrating nurses with different specialties)
- National Nurses Month (All during the month of May)
National Nurses Week concludes on May 12, a significant date in nursing. It is the birthday of Florence Nightingale, considered to be the mother of modern nursing.
The history of nurse appreciation
Although establishing a time to honor nurses was suggested as far back as 1953, it wasn't until 1974 that President Nixon proclaimed a National Nurses Week in February. Since then, the movement has grown globally and in 1982, President Ronald Reagan signed "National Recognition Day for Nurses" into a proclamation.
Versions of National Nurses Day and Nurses Week were observed in different states and countries in the time leading up to the proclamations. The American Nurses Association designated May 6 - 12 as Nurses Week in 1990 and has continued the tradition.

Write a 'thank-you' note
Writing thank you notes shows nurses you're thinking of them, and you see and appreciate the work they do each day. Using themed stationery or a colorful hand-picked card can be a nice touch to brighten a nurse’s day. Remember that your message can be as simple or as specific as you’d like.
