Meet Lizzy
Lizzie celebrated her 7th birthday in 2023, and it was a milestone. A milestone that her parents, Mary and Juan, wanted to celebrate with great enthusiasm. Lizzie has battled a brain tumor for most of her young life. When she was 18 months old, Lizzie was diagnosed with optic nerve glioma, a slow-growing brain tumor. The optic nerve is the one that connects the eye with the brain, which caused Lizzie to lose vision.
After receiving chemotherapy for years at a local hospital in her home state of Texas, Lizzie was referred to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital®. In the summer of 2021, she started to participate in a new drug protocol. After receiving the treatment, doctors saw tumor reduction and her vision stopped getting worse, her mother said. Several scans afterward have all been positive. Lizzie continues to take medication at home.
Since returning home, Lizzie started school and enrolled in classes in jiu-jitsu, where she has already earned stripes on her belt. Soon Lizzie will learn to ride a bike and prepare to become a triathlete just like her two older siblings. “She is a fighter. This has been a challenging road for anyone and she has handled it like a champion,” her mother said.
