What is liver cancer?

Liver cancer is a type of cancer that occurs in liver cells. The liver is located in the upper right part of the abdomen and is responsible for making bile, storing glycogen and filtering out harmful substances from the blood.

What types of liver cancer does St. Jude treat?

●      Hepatocellular Carcinoma: This type of liver cancer usually affects people whose livers have been under extra strain because of long-term infections or metabolic diseases, or prolonged use of certain drugs.

●      Hepatoblastoma: This type of liver cancer is usually found in babies and children up to age 3. It’s a rare type of cancer, diagnosed in fewer than one in a million children.

How liver cancer research donations help support St. Jude

The liver is our largest internal organ and has hundreds of vital functions. Here at St. Jude, we have the Zhu Lab and a team dedicated to liver cancer research. Our goal is to uncover how liver-tumor interactions contribute to the development of liver cancer as well as drug responses in both children and adults.

Unlike other hospitals, a majority of the funding for St. Jude comes from our generous donors. These gifts help us provide cutting-edge treatment, and families never receive a bill from St. Jude for treatment, travel, housing or food — so they can focus on helping their child live.

She is now back home, reuniting with yer younger brother.

“There are no words," said he mom, Yeremi, "just deep gratitude to St. Jude for giving me peace, comfort and making me feel at home. With its people, with its doctors — St. Jude is everything.
