US News & World Report badge

U.S. News & World Report ranks St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital as one of the nation’s best children’s hospitals for cancer research and treatment. St. Jude has been ranked among the top pediatric cancer hospitals year after year, since the Best Children’s Hospitals ranking was first published in 2008.

To determine ranking status, U.S. News & World Report gathers key information from nearly 200 medical centers and takes into account several factors, including clinical data, safety, nursing staff, and questionnaires.

Why St. Jude is one of the nation's top children's cancer hospitals

St. Jude is leading the way the world understands, treats and defeats childhood cancer. We know that cancer never rests, so neither do we. St. Jude is dedicated to taking our scientific breakthroughs and turning them into lifesaving, life-changing treatments.

Innovative treatments for exceptional results

St. Jude is the only National Cancer Institute Comprehensive Cancer Center devoted solely to children. In fact, St. Jude has even received the NCI’s highest ranking of “exceptional.” Doctors often send their toughest cases to St. Jude because of our innovative clinical trials, which include the latest treatments.

St. Jude has top survival rates for some of the most aggressive childhood cancers, including leukemia and medulloblastoma. St. Jude has increased survival rates for many childhood cancers, including acute lymphoblastic leukemia (a type of blood cancer). Since 1962 when the hospital opened, the survival rate for acute lymphoblastic leukemia increased from 4% to 94%.

We have pioneered cancer treatments that have helped increase the overall childhood cancer survival rate from 20% to more than 80% in the United States since we opened more than 60 years ago.

What's more, St. Jude shares its breakthroughs with other doctors and researchers online through dedicated programs such as St. Jude Cloud and St. Jude Cure4Kids. These resources have been created solely to help improve the quality of care and treatment of even more children across the world.

Our high rating from U.S. News & World Report affirms the extraordinary work done by our clinicians, researchers and support staff, who work with urgency to achieve cures for children with catastrophic illnesses. On behalf of the St. Jude clinical enterprise, I would also like to extend thanks to our collaborating teams at our St. Jude affiliate sites and referring physicians across the country.

Practicing nursing excellence

The most prestigious nursing-related designation a hospital can acquire is from the Magnet Recognition Program®. Health care institutions like St. Jude—which exhibit leadership, excellence in nursing practice and philosophy, commitment to the national standards for enhancing patient care, and a sensitivity to cultural and ethnic diversity—can be recognized through this program.

Patients can use these designations as a way to assess the quality of nursing care at a particular hospital. The status was granted to St. Jude in 2015 and once again in 2020 by the American Nurses Credentialing Center following a rigorous application process.

According to nationally conducted research, hospitals that are Magnet-designated statistically have lower patient mortality rates, fewer reported complications, and better procedure outcomes, which provide more satisfactory health care experiences for patients.

Promoting patient safety

St. Jude participates in national efforts to continuously improve patient safety and satisfaction. We submit data to the Leapfrog Group, which organizes patient quality and safety data for hospitals in the U.S. We are also a member of Children’s Hospitals Solutions for Patient Safety, a network of pediatric hospitals that learn from each other to ensure patient safety.
