What is the FedEx St. Jude Championship (FESJC)?

In 1970, St. Jude founder Danny Thomas partnered with Memphis leaders to make St. Jude Children's Research Hospital the designated charity of the Memphis Open golf tournament. The tournament became the St. Jude Classic.

In 1986, FedEx became the title sponsor. In 2019, the name changed to World Golf Championships–FedEx St. Jude Invitational. In 2022, the PGA Tour elevated the tournament to be part of the FedEx Cup, a three-tournament playoff to determine the champion of the year, and named the tournament the FedEx St. Jude Championship. The tournament has taken place at TPC Southwind since 1989.

Since the Memphis tournament initally partnered with St. Jude in 1970, it has raised more than $60 million for St. Jude, helping to advance the research hospital’s lifesaving mission. When it comes to golf in Memphis, it’s always been more than just a game.

What is the history of the FedEx St. Jude Championship?

The PGA TOUR brought professional golf to Memphis in 1958, debuting as the Memphis Open at Colonial Country Club. In 1970, the tournament became the Danny Thomas Memphis Classic, named after entertainer and St. Jude Children's Research Hospital founder Danny Thomas. Since then, the golf tournament's prestige has continually been elevated to its current status — the opening tournament of the FedExCup Playoffs.

FedEx St. Jude Championship Tournament History

1958 - Tournament begins

The PGA TOUR's debut in Memphis came in May at the Memphis Open. The Colonial Country Club hosted the inaugural Memphis event, which began with a purse of $20,000. Texas native Billy Maxwell earned his fourth career tour win at the event, taking home a $2,800 winner's check.

1961 - Dr. Middlecoff wins hometown event

Memphis golf legend Dr. Cary Middlecoff carded a final-round 67 en route to winning his hometown event. The victory marked his 39th career win on the PGA TOUR and his last victory before he retired later that same year.

1970 - St. Jude joins the cause

Twelve years following the inaugural tournament, the Memphis Open became the Danny Thomas Memphis Classic, named after entertainer and St. Jude Children's Research Hospital® founder Danny Thomas. Thomas agreed to lend his name to the tournament in exchange for St. Jude to become the tournament's primary beneficiary. Since then, Memphis' annual tour stop has raised more than $60 million for St. Jude, helping ensure patients' families never receive a bill for treatment, travel, housing or food — so they can focus on helping their child live.

1972 - The move to Colonial

The Memphis Open moved from Colonial Country Club in Memphis-proper to Cordova, where the "new" Colonial was bigger and better than ever.

1986 - FedEx becomes title sponsor

Twenty-eight years after the PGA TOUR arrived in the Bluff City, Memphis-based courier Federal Express became title sponsor of the TOUR's annual stop, which was renamed the Federal Express St. Jude Classic. The sponsorship marked FedEx's first in the sports industry. With the support of FedEx, this hometown event became a mainstay on the PGA TOUR schedule.

1989 - The move to Southwind

TPC Southwind was named the new home for the Federal Express St. Jude Classic and marked a new chapter for Memphis' annual TOUR stop following a 31-year run at Colonial Country Club. Texas native John Mahaffey was crowned the first TOUR winner at TPC Southwind.

1995 - The rebrand to FedEx St. Jude Classic

Following nine years of the Federal Express St. Jude Classic, the tournament was renamed to the FedEx St. Jude Classic, ushering in a new era of golf in Memphis.

2007 - FedExCup Playoffs begin

Established in 2007, the FedExCup is a season-long points competition offering $75 million in bonus money and culminating with the FedExCup Playoffs in August. Players vie to become the FedExCup champion, the one player who not only performs well during the PGA TOUR regular season but also excels through the pressure of the FedExCup Playoffs.

2019 - World Golf Championships comes to Memphis

Thirty years following the move to TPC Southwind, the annual PGA TOUR event was named a World Golf Championships event. Memphis' hometown event took on a new identity as the World Golf Championships–FedEx St. Jude Invitational, which garnered one of the most global fields on the TOUR schedule with 45 of the top 50 players in the Official World Golf Ranking teeing it up at TPC Southwind.

2022 - Elevated to a FedExCup Playoffs event

Renamed the FedEx St. Jude Championship in 2022, the tournament became the kickoff event for the FedExCup Playoffs, welcoming the PGA TOUR golfers who quality for the TOUR's postseason and fight to keep their seasons alive.
