About this study
HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) affects many young people in the United States, especially young gay, bisexual, and other sexual minority men. Medicines are available to prevent HIV and sexually transmitted infections (STIs):
- HIV Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is a pill or shot that helps stop HIV before it starts.
- Doxycycline is a medicine that can be taken after sex to lower the chance of STIs.
Even though these medicines work well, many young people do not start them or have trouble taking them regularly. This study will explore better ways to help youth learn about these options and use them.
The CHOOSE study will test a new set of mobile health tools called PrEP Choice. These tools include:
- A website to help people choose the right PrEP method
- An app to remind them about doses
- A texting system to give support and answer questions
The study asks these questions:
- Will mobile health tools make it easier for sexually active young men to choose which type of PrEP to take and to take it as recommended?
- When offered doxycycline for use after sex, who will take it, and will they take it as recommended?
The study will compare 2 groups. One group will get the PrEP Choice tools right away. The other group will get them later. Both groups will be offered PrEP and doxycycline. Participants will be followed for up to 18 months.
Researchers will measure how many people start PrEP, keep using it, and use doxycycline. They will also check if the tools are easy to use and helpful. The study will check for any problems or side effects. Researchers will make sure participants get appropriate medical support if needed. All information will be kept private.
We want to learn if the PrEP Choice mobile tools can help more young people protect themselves from HIV and other infections. If they work, these tools could be used in many places to make HIV prevention easier and more effective.
