Visitors and security

At St. Jude, we take steps to keep our hospital campus and housing safe, so our patients and families can focus on healing.

  • We are a gated facility.
  • We do not allow alcohol or illegal drugs on campus.
  • We do not allow weapons on campus, even for those licensed to carry weapons. Only on-duty law enforcement officers are allowed to carry weapons.
  • Our staff does not give out any information about a patient over the phone.

Your child should always wear their patient identification armband while in the hospital. We use this to identify your child before treatment. If you do not recognize a staff member, you can ask for their identification badge.

Children, their siblings, and guests must be supervised at all times. Please do not allow them to wander in the hospital or on hospital grounds. This lets our staff focus on caring for your child and other patients.

Report any suspicious person or behavior to a St. Jude security officer right away or call the security 24-hour control desk at 901-595-4444 or extension 4444 from a hospital phone.

If you cannot find your child, tell a St. Jude staff member, and they will help you find your child.

Going to a new place when your child is sick may cause stress and anxiety. You will begin to build a support network as you partner with our care team. Speaking with our team will become part of your daily life here at St. Jude
Your first visit may take a little longer than usual, as the staff needs to gather information to help care for and treat your child. For most patients, your daily life will include:

  1. Check in at Patient Registration so your child can receive an identification (ID) armband. They must keep this on their arm until they leave the hospital for the day.
  2. You will get a schedule card with your child’s appointment schedule for that day. You may also view their schedule in the Our St. Jude patient app or in St. Jude MyChart. Check for any reminders or schedule changes.
  3. Your child may then go to Pre-Clinic Assessment.
  4. Check-in with the clinic patient representative, who will tell the clinic that you have arrived.
  5. Have a check-up with a clinical care team member.
  6. Obtain treatment.

Some patients may also get imaging tests (like x-rays, CT, or MRI) or blood tests, depending on their health condition. They may also meet with other support staff or visit another specialty clinic.
If you need extra help while at St. Jude, you can use the Best Upon Request (BEST) concierge service. This free service helps our patients and families with daily life. They can:

  • Give you directions when you are lost
  • Find wagons and wheelchairs
  • Run errands, such as picking up dry cleaning
  • Get food deliveries
  • Prepare and mail packages
  • Order and pick up tickets
