FAMMEANS: A Global Look at Cancer Cost Burden

About this study

Financial problems caused by childhood cancer can make it harder for children to get the health care they need and can lead to worse health outcomes for both the child and their family. St. Jude researchers want to create a tool that identifies and measures financial hardship faced by families globally.

Families around the world deal with money stresses when their children have cancer. But there is not one good way to measure this stress. Some studies look at bills, while others look at missed treatments or feelings like anxiety. This study will help create a tool to measure financial hardship so that hospitals can help families more effectively.

The researchers will first test the tool in 2 hospitals in the United States. They will ask parents or caregivers of children with cancer to answer questions about their experiences. Then, they will test the tool in other countries to make sure it works well in different languages and cultures. Families will be asked to share their thoughts to help improve the tool.

The study includes parents or caregivers of children with cancer. In the U.S., study participants must speak English. In other countries, they must speak the local language. People in the study will be asked questions in person or on a touchscreen device. Their answers will be kept private.

By creating a better way to measure financial stress in families facing childhood cancer, this study may help hospitals and health care teams support families more effectively in the future.
