NACHO-BIO: Biology of Histiocytic Disorders

About this study

Histiocytic disorders are a group of rare diseases that happen when white blood cells grow or work in unusual ways. These disorders can damage organs, cause tumors, and lead to serious health problems. Researchers do not fully understand what causes many histiocytic disorders or why some people have more severe disease than others. 

Because these diseases are rare, gathering information from many patients is important to help improve future care.

NACHO-BIO is a study that collects health information and tissue samples from people with histiocytosis. The study includes diseases such as:

Blood relatives of people with these diseases may also join the study.

Researchers will review medical information from those who take part, including medical records with information about their diagnosis, treatment, and health history. Researchers may also collect samples left over after routine medical care. These samples may include: 

  • Blood
  • Tissue samples left over from biopsies and bone marrow collection
  • Fluid collected during a spinal tap
  • Saliva

People in the study can choose which samples they want to provide. No extra biopsies or spinal taps are done only for this study.

Researchers will study genes (DNA), proteins, immune cells, and other signs of disease found in these samples. They will compare these lab findings with information about each person's disease and treatment. Researchers hope to learn more about:

  • What causes histiocytic disorders
  • Why they appear different from person to person
  • How to better measure disease activity
  • How well treatments are working

Study goal:

To study genes, proteins, and how cells carry out activities in histiocytic disorders to see how these diseases develop and find new treatments 

Diagnosis:

Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH), Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH), Rosai-Dorfman disease (RDD), Juvenile xanthogranuloma (JXG), Erdheim-Chester disease (ECD), Malignant histiocytosis, Other rare histiocytic disorders
