Platelet Disorders Clinic

The St. Jude Platelet Disorders Clinic provides expert care for children, teens, and young adults with platelet disorders.

Platelets are part of the blood that helps to stop bleeding and repair blood vessels. Platelet disorders are a rare cause of severe bleeding in children. These conditions may be passed down in families (inherited). More often, they develop later, such as immune thrombocytopenia (ITP).

The Platelet Disorders Clinic at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital cares for children with low platelet counts or platelets that are not working properly. Pediatricians can refer patients to us. We also support other hematologists by providing consultations.

The Platelet Disorders team uses the most up-to-date tools to diagnose and treat children with platelet conditions, whether the conditions are inherited or develop later. Thanks to recent advances in therapy, many children can now safely enjoy everyday activities like sports.

We also offer clinical trials so that children can benefit from new treatments as they become available. Clinical trials are safe, and participation is optional.
