The Transplant Unit at St. Jude is dedicated to the care of patients receiving bone marrow/stem cell transplants or cellular therapy. The 18-bed unit is located on the second floor of the Chili’s Care Center and is staffed by nurses who have specific training in the care of patients who receive transplants. The standard nurse-to-patient ratio is 2:1. The entire Transplant Unit is HEPA filtered, and all rooms are HEPA filtered with positive pressure.
Each patient room has an adjoining parent room that has a bed, bath, TV and telephone. One parent is strongly encouraged to stay with the patient at all times.
Medical and nursing staff caring for the transplant patients conduct rounds on a daily basis. Those who attend rounds include the attending transplant physician, hematology/oncology fellow, transplant nurse practitioner or physician assistant, clinical nurse specialist, clinical pharmacist, clinical dietitian, child life specialist, clinical research nurse and social worker.
