Strategic Communication, Education and Outreach Summer Internship Opportunities

The Strategic Communication, Education and Outreach Internship offers six (6) motivated individuals the opportunity to spend a summer placement within St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Interns will work side-by-side with public relations and communications experts and practitioners in a professional environment to gain insight and experience into the inner workings of a communications team focused on health care and scientific research.

The internship will be project-focused with exposure to various components of the communications working environment and is located in Memphis, Tennessee.

Candidates should note that our internships are full-time learning experiences. You should expect to be available Monday through Friday during standard office hours starting May 2022 through August 2022.

All selected students will balance team and individual responsibilities, exhibit objectivity and openness to others’ views, welcome feedback, contribute to building a positive team spirit, and support everyone’s efforts to succeed.

  1. The Graphic Design intern will gain relevant experience in graphic design and illustration in a nonprofit health care setting. During the internship, the selected student will assist in all aspects of design from conception to dissemination with a focus on bolstering the reputation, recruitment and collaboration efforts of St. Jude. The selected student will be proactive, detail oriented, interested in working in a highly collaborative environment and will be eager to learn.

    Qualifications

    • Working toward an undergraduate degree from an accredited college or university with coursework in graphic design with a strong background and love for typography, illustration and layout. Candidate must have a 3.0 GPA or above and must be entering sophomore, junior or senior year to be considered.
    • Must be proficient with Microsoft Office products, such as Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, Teams and Excel
    • Expertise in Adobe Creative Cloud software, specifically InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator
    • Have an eye for layout design
    • Open to working on print and digital projects
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills
    • Interested in ideas but understands execution is equally important
    • Basic knowledge of color and trends, with the ability to apply that to art
    • Strong organizational, problem-solving and analytical skills
    • Able to manage priorities and work autonomously as appropriate

    Responsibilities

    • Create concepts and execute on briefs for our websites, social media channels, scientific journals and other initiatives
    • Brainstorm with team members on conference and event collateral to highlight the institution’s reputation as a premier children’s research hospital
    • Work closely with subject matter experts to illustrate scientific data and human anatomy
    • Create infographics of complex processes and present data in a simple and understandable way

  2. The Internal Communication Content Strategy intern will gain relevant experience in employee communications, digital platforms, content strategy and analytics in a health care setting. During the internship, the selected student will assist in researching best practices for internal content governance, developing strategies for content integration across multiple digital platforms, and updating and creating pages on the St. Jude intranet. The intern will also assist in the development of an internal style guide and internal navigation strategy for a new intranet platform. The intern will have exposure to a variety of internal groups including clinical, research and other administrative areas.

    Qualifications:

    • Working toward an undergraduate degree from an accredited college or university with coursework in media, communications, journalism, digital media, marketing, public relations, English or similar field with a 3.0 GPA or above. Candidates must be entering sophomore, junior or senior year to be considered.
    • Experience and proficiency with Microsoft Office products, such as Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, Teams and Excel

    • Assisting in the progression of the intranet migration project by analyzing pages to complete on-going content audit
    • Identifying content gaps within existing content
    • Assisting in the revision or creation of intranet webpages in SharePoint as needed
    • Creating employee app content to create a more streamlined and seamless user experience
    • Attending cross-functional meetings to better understand departmental and institutional needs and goals
    • Brainstorming, participating in decision-making, researching, and presenting project information to various teams
    • Assisting in interviewing employees through focus groups and monitoring and analyzing beta tests
    • Performing literature research, reviews and appraisals of journals to provide background on best practices for content governance

  3. The Medical Content Development intern will gain relevant experience in patient education, communications, digital platforms and global outreach in a health care setting. During the internship, the selected student will assist in developing content for web-based, print, and visual resources, communicating health and medicine, and executing technical elements to achieve team goals.

    The intern will assist with projects that support the team within content development and an online community for patients and families. The intern will have exposure to a variety of internal groups including clinical, research and other administrative areas.

    Qualifications:

    • Working towards graduate degree from an accredited college or university with coursework in communications, English or a medical specialty
    • Experience and proficiency with Microsoft Office products, such as Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, Teams and Excel
    • Skilled, empathetic, and creative person who can research, plan, and write content that explains complex concepts to patients/ families simply using a variety of visual media
    • Strong organizational, problem-solving and analytical skills
    • Cares deeply about helping others
    • Basic understanding of medical terminology
    • Skilled in online collaboration and tools to facilitate online collaboration
    • Ability to interface with various patient populations to solicit feedback on learning tools
    • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral
    • Fluency in Associated Press (AP) style

    Responsibilities:

    • Brainstorm and participate in decision-making, researching and presenting project information to various teams
    • Writing patient educational content
    • Interviewing various health care providers to develop the overall scope of projects and document results
    • Partner with frontline staff, patients and families to understand processes, patient flow, and concerns to ensure educational topics are noted for content development
    • Interviewing patients, families and caregivers to give feedback on patient education content and presentation and documenting results
    • Performing literature research, reviews and appraisals of journals to provide background on projects and best practices
    • Match graphic content to written content; assist with the development of video scripts and production as needed
    • Various administrative duties that include but are not limited to document completion, design, revision and editing

  4. The Social Media intern will work side-by-side with communications experts and practitioners in a professional environment to gain insight and experience into the inner workings of a team focused on maintaining and establishing the reputation of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

    As an experiential and immersive program, you will develop and hone your practical skills in a broad range of areas including organic social posting, digital paid media, strategic communications planning, copywriting and newswriting, and community relations.

    Qualifications:

    • Working toward an undergraduate degree from an accredited college or university with coursework in media, communications, journalism, digital media, marketing, public relations, English or similar field with a 3.0 GPA or above. Candidates must be entering sophomore, junior or senior year to be considered.
    • Experience and proficiency with Microsoft Office products, such as Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, Teams and Excel
    • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral
    • Fluency in Associated Press (AP) style
    • Strong organizational, problem-solving and analytical skills
    • Able to manage priorities and work autonomously as appropriate

    • Previous experience in social media reporting is a plus

    Responsibilities:

    • Create content for all social media platforms including Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Instagram
    • Identify opportunities for generating leads and engagement, based on team goals and efforts
    • Establish and refines content calendars according to institutional objectives and needs
    • Identify creative opportunities to enrich existing social media content
    • Research marketing and PR trends to amplify social media presence
    • Assist social media team in relevant promotional efforts, including planning for special projects and events
    • Assist in the planning of social media strategy through dedicated research
    • Monitor and files news clippings
    • Analyze campaign metrics
    • Prepare social media reports using listening tools on Hootsuite and Symplur
    • Analyze reports to assess opportunities for improvement
    • Develop and maintain working relationships to meet stakeholders’ objectives
    • Collaborate with Media Relations Team to ensure institutional news is being promoted on appropriate social media channels.

  5. The Video Production intern will gain relevant experience in video production, communication and project management in a nonprofit health care setting. During the internship, the selected student will assist in all aspects of video production from conception to dissemination, script writing and developing standard operating procedures for the department.

    The selected student will be a creative and motivated individual. Video is a widely used communication medium leveraged by the institution for internal and external purposes. This position will support the end-to-end video production process, while assisting the department in driving process efficiencies through assets like standard operating procedures and other documentation. The intern will have exposure to a variety of internal groups including clinical, research and other administrative areas.

    Qualifications

    • Candidates must be enrolled in graduate level studies in marketing, public relations, journalism, digital media, film or similar field with a 3.0 GPA or above.

    Responsibilities

    • Work with the video teams to outline standard operating procedures and other documentation to drive process and team efficiencies
    • Assist videographers, editors, producers and creative staff in capturing, editing and disseminating video content that supports our mission and values by operating as:
      • Pre-production planning (client intake, scheduling)
      • Grip (lighting, rigging)
      • Gaffer (cable management, power distribution)
      • Camera Assistant (lens changing, camera building, focus pulling)
      • Assistant Director (slates, continuity)
      • Editor (color, content, transitions, graphics)
      • Production Assistant (other duties, as assigned)

  6. The Web Specialist intern will gain relevant experience in all aspects of website management, including working with content strategy, establishing metrics/key performance indicators (KPIs), building webpages, participating in daily standups, reviewing component enhancements, analyzing webpage performance, evaluating organic search performance, and scanning all websites and making recommendations for improvements. The intern will have exposure to a variety of departments within the institution, including clinical, research and administration. This internship allows you to work on a variety of projects and websites and get experience with several software platforms such as Adobe Experience Manager and Conductor Searchlight.

    Qualifications

    • Working toward an undergraduate degree from an accredited college or university with coursework in media, communications, web management, information systems, digital media, user experience, English or similar field with a 3.0 GPA or above. Candidates must be entering sophomore, junior or senior year to be considered.
    • Must be proficient with Microsoft Office products, such as Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, Teams and Excel
    • Experience with a CMS platform, Google Analytics and Search Console, and Adobe Analytics preferred
    • Strong organizational, problem-solving and analytical skills
    • Able to manage priorities and work autonomously as appropriate

    Responsibilities

    • Collaborate with content strategists to aid in page placement, SEO recommendations and establishing meaningful KPIs
    • Build and design webpages, including images and videos
    • Review and assess websites for design decisions and component enhancements
    • Participate in the agile project management process with technology partners to direct and understand updates and technical fixes
    • Track all website analytics, assess KPI success, compile reports, and communicate data insights to the team, leadership, and the department
    • Assess website organic traffic performance and make recommendations for keyword performance improvements
    • Scan all websites for broken links, accessibility fixes, and SEO improvements, and compile final reports for stakeholders
